Leesburg Garden club presents a walking tour in Hillsboro, VA

The homes being showcased have never been on the tour before.  Nestled in the lush forested southern gap of the Short Hill lies Hillsboro, a town listed on the National Register of Historic Places for more than 40 years. The village is one of Loudoun County’s oldest, dating from 1752 with several local mills securing the future of the town over centuries. It is one of 50+ towns in the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Community, that serve as rest stops along the roughly 2,190 miles of the Trail from Maine to Georgia. The Hillsboro Preservation Foundation has initiated a Legacy Farm Marker program to honor and recognize the families that have maintained the old farms, conserving critical farmland and open space.

Visitors will enjoy a walking tour of 4 historic properties: Fieldstone Farm, one of the first Quaker stone homes, built in 1770 and today graced by sustainable gardens, the Morgart log cabin built c. 1800, the Italianate N. Janney Purcell House built in 1850, and, just across the street from these three homes, Hill Rose Cottage, an 1890 Victorian painted in contemporary colors and accented with a terraced formal garden. Hillsboro has successfully completed a major renovation of the town’s main street, adding roundabouts, sidewalks and Hope’s Garden as a community gathering place.
